They were spending a lot more than they were making and the war left  
Britain bankrupt.  That was one of the reasons for the somewhat tyrannical  
austerity policies of the Labor Government after WW2 that were the real source  
material for Orwell in writing 1984.
 
India, in fact the entire Empire, was a drain they could not afford.   
Empires, unless they are run with a will to be totally ruthless, are a terrible  
economic drain.  The British simply did not have that kind of will.

I don't think so Chuck, the British were making millions in trade between  
India and the West.  If anything I would say that trade through India  
helped in funding the british war efforts, not to mention providing soldiers  to 
boot!

I think liberation in India came just at the end of the war so  Gandhi's 
timing was perfect.  The British were preoccupied in winning  back Europe.
