Dear Friend:

One cannot stretch analogies too far. Yes quartz can carry gold, but not
always.

In contrast look at the ladder of the 7 Principles in Nature and in Man
[S.D. I 157, II 569 ]

The potential ability to distinguish TRUTH (gold) from FALSEHOOD or ILLUSION
(dross, quartz, etc…) is interior to every human Mind.

The ability to use this faculty is acquired by the intensive study of
THEOSOPHY – which may be looked on as the “Wisdom and History of the Ages.”

This study is to be self-imposed, if one is convinced that Theosophy is a
“path” that leads to self-understanding and an understanding of the working
of Karma – the Law hat impersonally guides the whole Universe. One of the
best ways to grasp the opening (the “Door” or “Gate” to the PATH will be
found through a careful study of the VOICE OF THE SILENCE, the BHAGAVAD GITA
by Krishna, the DHAMMAPADA by Gautama Buddha, and by Patanjali’s
YOGA-APHORISMS.

But first, a thorough grasp of the operating principles of nature as set
forth in H.P.B.’S THE KEY TO THEOSOPHY and Mr. W. Q. Judge’s THE OCEANOF
THEOSOPHY has to be secured – not a mere reading, but an actual careful
study of the relationships that pervade living Nature.

All facts obtained by Science and Scientists in the study of Nature are both
TRUTH (if the Facts are clearly seen and interpreted in exact language) and
HISTORY as they become items recorded in the imperishable files of the AKASA
(the highest level of the ”Astral Light.”)

The ability to perceive the “Gold” of truth is acquired by
self-purification. H.P.B. sets this out most clearly in her article WHAT IS
TRUTH [ Lucifer Magazine, Vol. 3, p. 425, Feb. 1888; U.L.T. H.P.B.
Articles, Vol. I, p. 1 ]

Briefly all humans have two levels of perception:

1. That of the “embodied mind” which uses as an organ of perception and
ratiocination the brain-mind or Lower Manas. [ Lower Manas is defined as
that aspect of Manas which is attached to Kama – the “principle of selfish
desires and passions.” ], and

2. That of the Higher Mind (Buddhi-Manas) or the immortal Individuality
consisting of the MONAD or, Atma-Buddhi-Manas. This is the Real Man, the
Divine Mind which is universal, unselfish, immortal and impersonal.

There are therefore two levels of “Truth.”

1. The Personal limited by selfishness and continually being altered as new
“facts” are discovered (and which, therefore, has been designated “relative
truth”), and

2. the Divine which is invariable and changeless; it is shared by all
Monads, all Beings, all Spiritual Entities and impersonal thinkers in the
entire Universe (and which, therefore has been designated “ABSOLUTE
TRUTH.”).

Theosophy deals with the record made of the 2nd type and also speaks of the
means whereby one can raise one’s consciousness (usually plunged in the 1st
type) to the level of the Universal Divine MIND – MAHAT – or BUDDHI-MANAS.

As said before, we soon discover that the “path” to absolute Truth is not
the worldly way of shifting and deception that is now almost automatically
practised by everyone. It is perhaps naïve in its direct simplicity of
meaning and practice, but has a long-term value based on the concept of the
Immortality of the HUMAN SOUL. Added to this is a heightened awareness of
the actuality of KARMA – universal justice and fairness – which grants to
every being the right to live a “free” life so long as that “freedom”: does
not infringe on or limit the living of any other being however weak, poor,
or seemingly insignificant. In one word it IS BROTHERHOOD actively and
consciously practiced all the time that leads the aspirant to the final Goal
of life. This goal has been defined as “SUPREME PERFECTION.” It is nota
selfish isolation but a universal TRUTH and FACT IN OPERATION. The
Individual who attains this apotheosis becomes an actual Brother to all
Life.

Actually , I meant to say , is the gold removed from the quartz ALTRUISM
itself?
As the stanza included an analogy of a miner looking at a quartz rock (us
mortals perceiving ALTRUISM?) but knowing more than the average about the
value of the metal (gold) contained within it [being similar to a chela at
various stages] but not the master or high adept who , having already
removed
the "gold" from the quartz questions not and acts accordingly?

Is the gold removed from the gold ALTRUISM itself?

word means "otherism".
The gold extracted or acquired from the higher forms of "otherism" are
the widening ability to "live to benefit all life." This in turn leads
to "continuity of consciousness" in ever widening circles.

We sleep most of the time: partly in bed, and partly when we say we are
"awake."
