Dear Jerry:
According to the "Key to Theosophy" the One Consciousness acting
through MANAS is dual.
It depends on the moral/ethical factor. As I understand it is
the intent of the free-willed individual that determines the
nature of Manas.
The reason for this is that Manas and all the mental faculty can
be deliberately directed towards the personal life of the present
incarnation alone - SELFISHNESS; or, it can be directed (at
first on occasion, periodically, and later, any or all the time)
on universal impersonal and "spiritual" (not psychic) themes.
The reason for this is that as you grasp, the source of
CONSCIOUSNESS is the ONE SPIRIT and its incarnated "Ray" in every
being, -- and, in mankind this is sharpened and focused in the
Manas/mind. It has become awake and gives independence.
The moral/ethical factor is the ability to see and understand
universal law and its many applications all around us in our
lives and the lives of others - so that we can, using the concept
of immortality and permanence for all, harmonize with all the
rest of Nature in her sweep of lawful progression. This is
UNSELFISHNESS and UNIVERSALITY in deliberate action through our
personality - and the process refines and spiritualizes it.
This is as I see and understand it, basing myself on theosophical
teachings to be found in KEY and in S D .

Do you think it should be done collectively? Manas does not
gravitate
upward into buddhi, but rather consciousness leaves its normal
focus
in manas and focuses instead in buddhi. Manas, our human mind, is
transcended in samadhi--which means that our consciousness rises
above it, not that our human mind goes anywhere.
