My answer and contribution to this discussion is:

to make this action---significant. That is the reason that we come into
incarnation---to learn to see through the thick veil of matter and
understand, in spite of having an ego (personality).

The past incidences do indicate that critical progress is made while in
incarnation. For example, Lord Buddha reached his Buddhahood when he
appeared 2500 years ago.
Does anyone read any writing about critical progress being made while out
of incarnation?
