I read your posting with much interest and also Alan's responses.
May I pose a thought ......
Imagine this...
Someone you have formed a loving relationship with by mail, in which you
and they feel close on philosophy of life, supported each other in
theory, became close over many years, assumes/believes your "love" is
truth and when thrown out of house by life's circumstances arrives in
the flesh on your doorstep.

What do you do?

It's a question (in another form) I ask my theosophist husband every few
months.  It's a question I ask myself constantly.

What means "Brotherhood".
