J. Mead,
Hmmm, I hope your not thinking I support apocalyptic earth doom, lol. I don't subscribe to religious conspiracy theory's. My view of the 2012 event is as I have previously posted it represents "The Dawn of Lift of Mind of All Mankind"this was the origination of the UFO Fella's in 1976 as given in The Brian Scott Case. But it also is the same view of the Maya, not that "time" ends, not that the "world" ends, not of death and destruction. But that the Fourth Great cycle of 5125 years completes and a "New" Cycle begins which starts the 5th and last cycle of 5125 years for thier Great Year of 25,920 year. And like Blavatsky in my view the Maya say this New "beginning" of the 5th Age
presents the opportunity for the elevation of mind ushering in the 'dawn" (in due time) of higher awareness, higher consciousness, higher responsibility, higher survival ethics, and the coming of higher Unity of the peoples of the Earth,. The Maya haven't said they predict the doom of mankind and the Earth due to the 2012 event in my personal view.
I do agree religions pet the fear of all mankind too much, and for too many self serving reasons as do all who possess the conditioned mind are driven to do. A huge number of books and media find riches, wealth, and freedom from toil for those who scare by poisoning the minds of simple people.
John

"Watching death and destruction from a distance has the disconnect"
That is a good line. Our world has that aspect of disconnect developed
into a highly evolved Science. It is one of the great information-age
paradoxes that the connectedness and disconnectedness are simultaneously
distinct yet indistinguishable.
It is, as if, any collective of people can be destroyed, and people
want/don't-care if they are destroyed, yet somehow any particular
individual is never harmed in the collective/group. It is one weird
meme. However, the really interesting thing is that the individual,
themselves, can be in the collective/group eliminated, but they exclude,
deny or ignore the effect upon themselves directed by their own
membership. So, we gleefully await the eschatology we fear. Perhaps
that explains how the "Rapture" is "sold" so easily (just referring to
some various Christianities e.g.). A form of self-indirection.
