Hmmmm... I don't know about the price or the statement that there are so few copies left. I myself have this edition - albeit only volume I.
There are several copies floating around but in variant bindings. The gold imprint is the same but the colour of the binding differs. This one (like mine) is red, I have seen them in brown and green. The imprint gives no clue except that the date 1877 is usually given.
A good bibliography of her works should point out which of these editions by Bouton is the first edition first state, first edition second state, and so forth.
