They were not the first, but perhaps the most wellknown in the western countries today. But people in theosophical circles like to think that they were the first.
Try to get hold on whom the Buddhists and Adwaitists who visited USA in the early 20th century were.
Then I think you parhaps will agree with me.

  Yes of course these teachings were available, but were inaccessible to most 
  people in the west.  As far as I know it was only Gurdgieff and Krishnamurti 
  that brought them to the west.  Both of which were laughed at as metaphysical 
  try-hards.
