Yes.
CWL was following a bad path.
I wonder when it actually went wrong for him?
After the Coulomb /Hodgson affair?

If we aught to believe CWL's own words, he was indeed one of, if not, THE fastest developed member of TS going from being a chela on probation and becoming an officially proclaimed Arhat or more? within 30 years. Today no TS Arhats are proclaimed officially, and not Arhats are exclaiming that the TS or ES leader is infallible in wisdom, and craving obedience....or?

"Arihantas in Jainism

In Jainism, the term "arhat" or "arihant" is a synonym for jina and is a siddha who has not yet died and thereby lost all aghatiya karma.

It is not a synonym of Tirthankar, which refers specifically to certain arhats who have certain karmas that enable them to become teachers of Jainism. The Jain Navakar Mantra starts with "Namo Arhantanam".

The word Arihanta is made up of two words: 1) Ari, meaning enemies, and 2) hanta, meaning destroyer. Therefore, Arihanta means a destroyer of the enemies. These enemies are not people, but rather inner desires known as passions. These includes anger, ego, deception, and greed. These are the internal enemies within us. Until we control our passions, the real nature or the power of our soul will not be realized or manifested. When a person (soul) wins over these inner enemies he/she is called Arihanta."

"The word was used (as it is today in the liturgy of Theravada Buddhism) as an epithet of the Buddha himself as well as of his enlightened disciples. "

"In Theravada Buddhism the Buddha himself is first identified as an arahant, as are his enlightened followers, because they are free from all defilements, without greed, hatred, delusion, ignorance and craving, lacking "assets" which will lead to future birth, the arahant knows and sees the real here and now. This virtue shows stainless purity, true worth, and the accomplishment of the end, nibbana."

  Anand tells me:

  -----------------------------------------------
There are some mistakes in your logic. You are assuming that if a person stood in the presence of the Lord of the World, that person becomes infallible and nothing what he/she said should be doubted. This assumption is not correct. As you give much importance to Mahatma Letters, I write here a statement from a Mahatma Letter. In it Mahatma says "Light of omniscience and infallible prevision, which shines only for the highest of the Chohans (perhaps Lord of the
World is referred), is still far away from me" That means Masters don't claim to be infallible, and they don't claim to know everything.
If Masters admit it, why does Daniel expect that Annie Besant, Leadbeater or anybody else should be infallible in what they say and do? And Daniel goes to other extreme. He points out few mistakes of disciples and then brands them as "charlatan imitations", fake etc.
What Daniel seems to suggest is there are people who are either always perfect or there are people who are faking everything . In reality, disciples are always in between these two extremes. People should not make mistake of expecting perfection from disciples always and they should not call them charlatans just because disciples made some mistakes.
  -------------------------------------------------------

Now here Anand sounds like he is halfway making some commonsense observations. Even quoting the Mahatma Letters!! :)

But compare what Anand says with what Mr. Leadbeater actually said. Remember that Leadbeater is encouraging a certain mindset.

  Leadbeater tells us:

  ------------------------------------------------
"What can I say to you of your President [Annie
Besant] that you do not know already? Her colossal
intellect, her unfailing wisdom, her unrivalled
eloquence, her splendid forgetfulness of self,
her untiring devotion of work for others - all
  these are but a small part of her greatness;
they are on the surface, they may be seen by all,
they leap to the eyes. But there are other qualities,
other powers, of which you cannot know, because they
pertain to the secrets of Initiation. She is a
pupil of our Masters; from the fount of Their
archaic wisdom she derives her own, the plans which
she is carrying out are Their plans for the welfare
of the world. THINK THEREFORE, HOW GREAT AN
HONOUR IT IS FOR YOU that you should be permitted
to work under her, for in doing so you are virtually
working under Them. THINK HOW WATCHFUL YOU SHOULD
BE TO MISS NO HINT WHICH FALLS FROM HER LIPS, to carry
out EXACTLY whatever instructions she may give to you.

Remember...there will be times when you cannot
understand her motives, for she is taking into account
many things which you cannot see and of which
she must not tell you. BUT WHETHER YOU UNDERSTAND
OR NOT, YOU WILL BE WISE TO FOLLOW HER IMPLICITLY, JUST
  BECAUSE SHE KNOWS.

THIS IS NOT MERE SUPPOSITION ON MY PART, NO MERE
FLIGHT OF THE IMAGINATION; I HAVE STOOD BESIDE YOUR
PRESIDENT IN THE PRESENCE OF THE SUPREME DIRECTOR
OF EVOLUTION ON THIS GLOBE, AND I KNOW WHEREOF I
SPEAK. Let the wise hear my words, and act accordingly."
  --------------------------------------------------------

I would think almost anyone can see the mindset that Leadbeater is encouraging with his words.

  "I KNOW WHEREOF I SPEAK....."

And it would appear that thousands during Leadbeater's time followed his "advice"....
