Via actions of the members of the society, especially ones that have
been around a long time, they have a tendency to represent Theosophy
both internally and externally. Statements made by someone who is
clearly not fit to perform his role in the society, and one who makes
contradictory statements like Leadbeater, will give people a negative
image about Theosophy. It may even influence a would-be Theosophist to
give up his studying if they were to happen upon an author who made
outrageous claims.

How would it feel if your favorite author is the one who drove someone
off the path to enlightenment? Someone who was willing to dedicate his
life to the ideals of theosophy and become altruistic, but then
decided against it because they couldn't trust the person(s) they
first read about. After all, if a building looks a little shaky, why
would you walk into it?

So if someone wasn't just naturally drawn in, but rather "happened
upon" Theosophy, appearances would be everything at first, until they
began to understand it. It's just human nature--why would someone give
up a good portion of my life to study something that might not be
real?
