Dear Iain,
I don't know anything about George Galloway other than (to use a
Texas expression) he opened a can of whup-ass on Senator Coleman that
was a pure joy to behold. He also told off warmonger Christopher
Hitchens in a way that was memorable to say the least:

scroll down for multiple options to hear the Galloway testimony. In
a culture in which rightwing=bully and liberal=wimp (kinda like
Theosophy, huh?) it's a relief to see a leftist who can "get up in
their faces" as Galloway did.
Now, to your post:

True, and within nations there are huge variations. Nevertheless,
national character is at least a significant construct. I used to
think of the Marshall Plan as exemplifying the US national
character. Now Abu Ghraib figures into that picture.
the only sembelance of national identity is when the
football is on such as the world cup, but as soccer is substitute
warfare perhaps that is not a bad thing,

If you're active in the Scottish TS, I should mention that I'm still
appreciative of the kind words in your section journal about my
research years ago.
Cheers,
