Dear Iain,
I don't know anything about George Galloway other than (to use a
Texas expression) he opened a can of whup-ass on Senator Coleman that
was a pure joy to behold. He also told off warmonger Christopher
Hitchens in a way that was memorable to say the least:

a culture in which rightwing=bully and liberal=wimp (kinda like
Theosophy, huh?) it's a relief to see a leftist who can "get up in
their faces" as Galloway did.

True, and within nations there are huge variations. Nevertheless,
national character is at least a significant construct. I used to
think of the Marshall Plan as exemplifying the US national
character. Now Abu Ghraib figures into that picture.
