If you are ever in Arizona swing by Tomnbstone (that is the name of a
town, believe it or not) and visit Boot Hill. The people buried
there are almost all old west gunfighters who were killed in their
teens and their attitude toward death was more than slightly
cavalier. They would write down their preferred epitaph and keep it
in their shirt pocket. Then when they died the thing would be put on
their gravce marker. It is probably the world's only hilarious
cemetery. I only remember two of the epitaphs:
Don't laugh at me as you walk by
For as you are now, so once was I
And as I am now, you woon will be.
Remember me!
Most of them said "Stomped to death, 1883" or something like that.
But one fellow wrote:
Blessed is he who spares these stones
And cursed is he who moves my bones.
Of course cemeteries were a lot spookier then than they are now.
There is an old TWILIGHT ZONE episode called "Tge Grave" whiich
really brings that home. I dunno if it is availavle on DVD or not.
There is no violence in it at all. The effect is created entirely
with superb acting. Scariest damn thing I ever saw.
