Subject: Brazil: Sacrifice of animals legalized!!
Please write to the Governor.

On 06.29.04 representatives of the State of Rio Grande
do Sul (RS), Brazil, passed a Bill written by Mr.
Edson
Portilho (PL nš 282/2003), that allows sacrifice of
animals in African religious practices, in order to
grant the constitutional right of "freedom of
religion"
.

We need your help to ask the governor of RS, Mr.
Germano Rigotto do NOT sign the Bill! Brazil has laws
to protect animals and such cruelty is prohibited.
However "Candomble", the Afro religion that sacrifices
animals, is strong part of our culture and there is a
lot of pressure being applied.

Although officially domestic animals are not to be
used
in such rituals, humane societies in Brazil have found
black kittens and frogs with their mouths sewn
(alive!!!) innumerous times! In most of cases the
animal are not killed but seriously injured .Chickens
also are constantly found alive and left bleeding.

One of the stupid parts of this law, orders the
sending
of the sacrificed animals to people in need
(orphanages, homeless people, etc...).

Please help us to stop this outrage!! Ask the governor
to please ban the " PL 282/2003".
