Very interesting. Eliphas Levi proposed a theory of oracles hich
seems to me to better explain their value in cases in which they have
value. He sees them as a sort of tabula rasa on which the
unconscious mind or Higher Self can project otherwise inaccessible
contents and thereby make them available to the conscious mind. They
are in other words a means of communication between two parts of
oneself which tend not to communicate freely.
On another level the I CHING is a form of biblomancy in which ione
opens a book at random to get answers to a question. The coinc or
yarrow sticks cover up the fact that the book is essentially being
opened at random (unless the unconscious oe Higher Self has the
ability to influence the coins which is a possibility.) It is
therefore a variation on the classical biblomancy, in which one opens
a bible at random after posing a question, or some such thing as
NAPOLEON'S BOOK OF FATE. Anyone who has used it knows the I CHING is
fart and away the best of these.
