It has been awhile since I read the story, but as I recall, there was 
a professional conjurer present who inspected the scene carefully and 
rendered an opinion that the letter was not deposited by trickery. 
It is the presence of a trained witness which leads me to suggest 
that this is a good candidate for evidence pof phenomenal action. 
One would think such a person would not be easily gulled by simple 
tricks, being trained as he was in how the tricks were staged.
