Dear Peter:

This week's assignment: Seems to employ numbers and diagrams to
explain the Macrocosmic Evolutionary scheme and then this is
correlated to Human Development of the capacity to think
independently.

May I insert some comment in the text below? Perhaps our readers
will look over these and see how they think on them.

------------------------------------

S D I 66-7 [ see TRANSACTIONS, pp. 107 - 111; B:CW Vol. X ]

STANZA III. -- Continued.

ONE and THREE

The MONAD (as "ABSOLUTE") "evolves" the 3 in "Manifestation,"
and "retires." [S D I 427, 573-4]

Q.	Should this be "evolves" or radiates, or emanates?

What is brought into being?

How is this done? Is it through Karma ?

Does UNIVERSAL KARMA operate to bring on a fresh Manvantara?

Is the basis for a new manifestation the "residue" of an older
one?

Can we say Karma of the Monads that "go to sleep" is this the
"residue?"

The THREE IN ONE (is Atma-Buddhi-Manas) the "Higher TRIAD" : S D
II pp. 113, 595-6 597fn, 599

THREE

"3" (Symbol: TRIANGLE) always seem to Metaphysical and
Spiritual [S D I 237] as viewed from our materialistic
perceptive stance in "matter." [see also diagram in S D I 200]

In "Matter" the "3" are said to correlate with the 3 main gases:
S D I 623, 254, 593, 626-7.

THREE and FOUR

(Then) THE THREE (triangle) FALL INTO THE FOUR (quaternary). [ S
D I 60, 99]

Yet H P B in the S D I p. 58; II p.621, also states they
become the "sacred FOUR." the TETRAKTIS [S D I 60, 89fn, 99,
134, 242, II 596].

Q. Does it appear there are "4" on the metaphysical as well as
"4" on the material planes?

THREE and SEVEN and TWELVE

>From the "SACRED THREE" emanate the 7 -- the CREATIVE ASPECTS of
SPIRIT working in MATTER. Symbol the PYRAMID: 3 faces x 4 = 12,
STANDING ON A SQUARE, and oriented to the Cardinal Points of a
particular cyclic period. Astronomically and cyclically
significant. [ Triangle and Square: see S D II 24, 36, 596,
601, 570-575,. ]

TWELVE [ 2, 3, 4, 6 ]

12 (Twelve) appears to pertain to the months of the Solar
calendar ZODIAC;. the 12 hours of the "day" -- and a further
contrasting 12 hours (polar opposites) of the "night;" and, to
12 classes of "creators." [ S D I 213, 400, 450, 649, 651, II
77, 93. 576.]

DUALITY and SIX	SEVEN is SYNTHESIS

When in the double triangle interlaced we are shown duality and
the 2 x 3 = 6 (the 7th being in the center as the synthesis of
the 6) we are given a hint of the way in which the poles of
SPIRIT are opposed by Material poles.

The central figure (Man) is the link whereby this dynamic
equilibrium is able to interact. Man is a symbol for the MIND
(in Nature as Universal MAHAT, in Man as "Manas" the thinking
agent).

TRIPLE MANAS -- WHY ?

Hence MANAS is triple. [Key: pp. 175-6]. It is there explained
how the "dual" Manas is really a TRIPLE. There, the reasons in
human psychology for this are given:

1. BUDDHI-MANAS the "Spiritual divine Ego," and

2. there is the "Inner or Higher Ego" Manas when it acts
independently of Buddhi. And,

3. there is the "Lower, personal Ego," or Kama-Manas as a
combination of lower Manas and the Kama-rupa (vehicle of desires
and passions) -- also called the false Personality (as a mask of
the true Individual).

FOUR

"4" (Symbol: a square, or two intersecting radii in a circle, or
the 4 Cardinal points and the three "dimensions" of matter)
relates to the Material aspects of Nature. It is called the
"second figure in Nature" [S D II 594] -- it is composed of
those Monads which have chosen to occupy "a lesser position" [G.
Notes, pp. 132-3] so as to provide the Monads of greater
experience with the necessary vehicle and" mirrors" where in to
assist in the guidance of evolution. as a whole.

"Squaring the Circle" : known to the ancient Hindus: S D II
450, 544.

The Macroprosopus is a perfect square S D II 450, 626.

A Symbol of TRUTH as a cube S D II 600.

----------------------------------

THE RADIANT ESSENCE BECOMES SEVEN INSIDE, SEVEN OUTSIDE (a). THE
LUMINOUS EGG (Hiranyagarbha), WHICH IN ITSELF IS THREE (the
triple hypostases of Brahma, or Vishnu, the three "Avasthas"),
CURDLES AND SPREADS IN MILK-WHITE CURDS THROUGHOUT THE DEPTHS OF
MOTHER, THE ROOT THAT GROWS IN THE OCEAN OF LIFE (b).

The use of geometrical figures and the frequent allusions to
figures in all
ancient scriptures (see Puranas, Egyptian papyri, the "Book of
the Dead" and
even the Bible) must be explained. In the "Book of Dzyan," as in
the Kabala,
there are two kinds of numerals to be studied -- the figures,
often simple
blinds, and the Sacred Numbers, the values of which are all known
to the
Occultists through Initiation. The former is but a conventional
glyph, the
latter is the basic symbol of all. That is to say, that one is
purely
physical, the other purely metaphysical, the two standing in
relation to
each other as matter stands to spirit -- the extreme poles of the
ONE
Substance.

================================

DTB	Might it be well to surmise that the books ISIS UNVEILED and
SECRET DOCTRINE are strewn with wonderful hints and statements
relating to the various creative agents, planes, and other
definitions of force, power, and purpose that pervade both the
Universe and its suns and planets, as well as the development of
a MANKIND on any planet where the process of free and independent
THOUGHT is progressing ?

------------------------------------------------

S D
As Balzac, the unconscious Occultist of French literature, says
somewhere,
the Number is to Mind the same as it is to matter: "an
incomprehensible
agent;" (perhaps so to the profane, never to the Initiated mind).
Number is,
as the great writer thought, an Entity, and, at the same time, a
Breath
emanating from what he called God and what we call the ALL; the
breath which
alone could organize the physical Kosmos, "where naught obtains
its form but
through the Deity, which is an effect of Number." It is
instructive to quote
Balzac's words upon this subject:--

"The smallest as the most immense creations, are they not to be
distinguished from each other by their quantities, their
qualities, their
dimensions, their forces and attributes, all begotten by the
NUMBER? The
infinitude of the Numbers is a fact proven to our mind, but of
which no
proof can be physically given. The mathematician will tell us
that the
infinitude of the numbers exists but is not to be demonstrated.
God is a
Number endowed with motion, which is felt but not demonstrated.
As Unity, it
begins the Numbers, with which it has nothing in common. . . . .
The
existence of the Number depends on Unity, which, without a single
Number,
begets them all. . . . . What! unable either to measure the first
abstraction yielded to you by the Deity, or to get hold of it,
you still
hope to subject to your measurements the mystery of the Secret
Sciences
which emanate from that Deity? . . . . And what would you feel,
were I to
plunge you into the abysses of MOTION, the Force which organizes
the Number?
What would you think, were I to add that Motion and Number* are
begotten by
the WORD, the "Supreme Reason" of the Seers and Prophets, who, in
days of old,
sensed the mighty Breath of God, a witness to which is the
Apocalypse?"
(SD I 66-67)

Your questions / Observations

PETER
Is it significant that Stanza III sloka 4 speaks of the 3 falling
into the
4? What is it that is being referred to by the numbers? Indeed,
why has
NUMBER become significant at this stage?

What is the "radiant essence" which becomes "seven inside, seven
outside"?

-------------------------------------------

DTB	Perhaps this is the AKASA -- if it retains the impress of all
causes and their effects, the way in which one might think of it
is as an enveloping Egg" without in any way limiting IT to that
shape, or to any volume of SPACE, or any limitation in our terms
of TIME, and of Power or FORCE. ?

I can imagine that the ASTRAL BODY has a division which
corresponds to the AKASA and that would then serve as a kind of
"EGG" which would surround the INDIVIDUAL BRAHMA which is implied
in the concept of the MONAD.

When we think about our REAL SELF -- the INNER MAN -- what kind
of concepts do we use?

Are they in terms of "limits" and also, in terms of "potentials
?" Can we then say that we are bi-polar and that condition in no
ways inhibits our power of imagination to aggrandize or diminish
our mental concepts ?

Don't we remain apart (so to say) from such considerations, and
place them on a "mirror" (so to say) where we can scrutinize and
adjust them or, visualizing the future, can we decide to alter
and reframe them?

==========================

Let's look at the first part of this Sloka up to "(a)" and its
commentary.
In the next few days I will post the commentary to the second
part, "(b)".

Friends,

As we move on to the next sloka in this Stanza (SEE BELOW) we may
notice the
complexity increasing, as it has done since the beginning of
Stanza III. If
we remember back to the PROEM, HPB writes that Stanza III
"describes the
Re-awakening of the Universe to Life after Pralaya. It depicts
the
emergence of the 'Monads' from their state of absorption within
the ONE; the
earliest and highest stage in the formation of 'Worlds'..."(page
21).
