Speaking only for myself, not as a theosophist, but as one being to
another, adopting the ethical precepts as taught by HPB and others
has made a huge difference in my view. The discipline of practicing
the ethical intent of the precepts causes an invisible form to
result. It is similar to the invisible form that is the result of
taking a vow. This resulting form is like a parametric structure in
space/time or some might say by imprinting the ether or by
magnetizing akasa. However you chose to view it, it is there when one
encounters an event where a decision needs to be made. Simply said,
the feedback from this form is similar to information that two paths
have opened up before you and one is presented with the wisdom that
one path leads away from the parameter of the precept and the other
within it. Or if you care to look at it with goal oriented thinking,
you could say that the feedback indicates that a course correction is
necessary in order to continue toward the goal.
The result of the action based on this the ethical intent is in
embedded in the trailing stream of consciousness. Pure and simple it
is the resulting karma. Look in the mirror, what you see is the
result of previous causes, wholesome or un-wholesome, noble or
ignoble, skillful or un-skillful, virtuous or un-virtuous. We are the
ripening of our karma.
There are many rewards in small ways and great ways along the path of
holding to these ethical precepts as well as many trials. The only
way to experience the truth of this is to test for yourself. First by
a keen examination of the teachings and then through practice which
will in turn yield experience that will complete the truth with
wisdom.
The teachings are a formula for the antidote of the poisons of the
sufferings and emotional afflications that besiege this world, but it
is up to you to administer it to yourself. No one can do that for
you. The precepts are a support, a basis on which to guide one's
conduct in life. Choosing this for your self is the small way,
choosing this path for the benefit of others, yourself included, is
the great way.
Be encouraged. You will not be alone.
