Let me offer to explain some notes I mad a while back on this
subject

PUBLISHING IN THE ULT



A. There are three ULTs that publish:

1. U.L.T. / T.Co. Inc in Los Angeles -- also THEOSOPHY
Magazine

2. U.L.T. / T. Co. (Private) Ltd. in Bombay -- also THE
THEOSOPHICAL MOVEMENT mag.

3. U.L.T. / T. Co. Mysore (Pvt.) Ltd, Bangalore -- Judge and
HPB articles in Pamphlet series

Being in contact regularly with each other they do not overlap,
except that Bombay can publish for the Asian market at a lower
price than LA can, and some of the smaller books are also
published in Bombay

ULT/T. Co in LA and Bombay supply the books as needed to other
ULTs.


WHO OWNS ULT?


Q. had incorrectly assumed there was one Theosophy Company
publishing and distributing books etc.

A. I don't mind as these things are important and ought to
be grasped ahead of time.

I also think that it is better that all items be made as plain
as possible.

I really am trying to make it plain that there is NO "ONE"
"Theosophy Company." There are many. They are all organized
locally at various times by those Associates who made themselves
responsible locally for starting a ULT. All of them are kept
going only by local students.

For example if you go to London where there is a "Theosophy
Company Ltd. "you will find that it is staffed by the London
associates who support the Lodge work there and take care of the
financial matters relevant to London. I, for instance, do not
know who is currently on their Board, and really I do not care.
They have their own problems to handle, we have ours.

There is no inter-weave or interlocking directorships.


Q. I don't quite understand the Theosophy Company set up
around the
world, but never mind, the spirit of the thing speaks to me
loud and clear
and that's what counts the most. Also I don't want to infringe
on any
anonymity with persistent questions.


A. T. Co relations, are simple and relatively quiet affairs,
and this is
how these things have run since 1909.

To put it as plainly as I can. THERE ARE NO FINANCIAL
INTERLOCKS OR CONTROLS BETWEEN ANY TWO ULTs.
AND MOST CERTAINLY: NO ONE OWNS THEM. EACH
IS AUTONOMOUS.

They can function with or without a "T. Company."

If tomorrow you wished to start a "ULT STUDY GROUP" at
Your home and had interested students coming you could -- you
would support it until such time as enough came and
jointly decide to start a Lodge -- and this is happening all the
time in practice. You and your group of associates would be
responsible for your affairs and could not depend on any
other T. co. to advance funds, for instance, to further your
work. Everything has to be voluntary and self-generated locally.

Theosophy is the "glue" -- not money or legal relations.

Q. Thank goodness == you have no idea how much that frees
us all to do real work.


A. All the business complexities are avoided in the ULT.

There is no ignorance between Lodges in the mater of who
are the most active and dedicated students and associates.
They cannot help standing out. But that is not the basis for
relations. And then those who work the most may or may
not be also on the Boards of the fiduciary companies. It
does not matter so long as one is free to dedicate one's time
to spreading Theosophy and keeping it alive.

It is solely the promulgation of THEOSOPHY -- even if I
sound like an old saw cutting the same path in words again
and again.

Our "business minds" and habits vanish in the simplicity
Of the ULT -- we unfortunately have to have "fiduciary
bodies" to comply with the local Laws; and prepare reports that
"charitable bodies" are obliged to maintain and submit
because they handle in trust other people's funds that are
destined to support the publishing, the public promulgation,

At each place the Public Records maintained by a
"Registrar of companies" (or its equivalent) keep open the
records
of the operations that ULT fiduciary bodies turn in annually,
and the names addresses of "Directors" or "Trustees" are all
registered there. Anyone who compares those will find that
there are no overlaps and no ties that bind one to another.

This is true FREEDOM to do work.

people as 'organizational' activities."

Dallas, I am looking forward to your answers to John's sincere
questions. In all your previous descriptions of ULT and how it
works, you seem only to speak of what the ULT does in very
abstract
and ideal terms, but you have never written on the very
down-to-earth
topics that John brings up in his questions. I am not an
associate
of ULT, but if I ever decided to join, I would want to have clear
and
straightforward answers to the questions John is asking. I would
also think most if not all ULT associates would want to know how
these things are decided and who has the final decision making
power.
