DearChris:

Re ASTRAL BODY Nature and functions

If you can secure a copy of either THE KEY TO THEOSOPHY by H.P.B. or the OCEAN OF THEOSOPHY by W. Q. Judge (both available “on-line” through BLAVATSKY NET) you will find in the INDEX that many of your questions are answered in the text.

As to memory impacted in the ASTRAL BODY.

AKASA THE HIGHEST ASPECT OF THE ASTRAL BODY

The 7th and highest aspect of the ASTRAL BODY is technically called the AKASA -- there is an imperishable record of all that is done by anyone or anything in Nature up to the present date.  To access the AKASA requires spiritual purity where harmlessness, charity and moral rectitude are the fundamental keys.  Such knowledge is not entrusted to the selfish.

LOWER - ASTRAL BODY  (Lowest aspect of AKASA)

The lower ASTRAL BODY is primarily the model for the physical atoms, molecules, cells and other structures.  Every living being has an “astral body.” (minerals, vegetables, animal and mankind).  Associated with the ASTRAL BODY is KARMA, or the moral component of all that is said, done or desired.

EARTH’S ASTRAL PLANE

Also associated with the ASTRAL BODY and the ASTRAL PLANE ) which interpenetrates our Earth) is its power to record and then to reflect every minute event, be ita desire, a thought, an act that anyone or anything does relating to the present incarnation, and extending back into history.  In that it is similar to AKASA but seems to be relatively attached tom the baser side of life, morally.

If you are able to access the books mentioned above you will find that many more aspects are covered.

MONADS IN EVOLUTION AND THE ASTRAL BODY

Basically, the whole manifested Universe is filled with incalculable armies of “MONADS.”  Each Monad is a “life-unit” consisting of SPIRIT / MATTER in a close and inseparable combination.  These MONADS are also called the Eternal Pilgrims.   They progress eternally from the limitations of material and physical forms (the MATTER component) to the spiritual, divine and imperishable pole of SPIRIT).  As they progress over an enormous period of time, we find the Theosophical doctrines describing themas elementals, minerals and crystals, plants, animals, humans, and then a number of divisions of super-men such as Adepts, Mahatmas, Bodhisattvas, Buddhas, Dhyan Chohans, Planetary Spirits, Builders, Cosmocratores.  The distinguishing fact of these classes of super-men isthe MIND made FREE and  ACTIVE.  This enables each such MONAD to achieve independence and choice.  With this stage arises the question of its own self-determined ethico-moral position.

KARMA AND THE MONADS AND THE ASTRAL BODY

Karma guides evolution and has rules and laws concerning the vast heterogeneity of Nature.  When Man-Mind becomes free he begins to guide and control his own education.  He finds himself as a mind-being midway between the generosity of wisdom and selfishness of personally acquired knowledge.  Our civilization, in general, shows acute manifestations of selfishness in every direction.  We could with fairness say that we are enveloped in Lower Mind (Kama-Manas),

selfish activities, mainly with a view to achieve ascendancy over others and control them for the purpose of our personal ease and wealth.  This is the antithesis of Spirituality, and of the Buddhi-Manas (the Wise and Universally attuned MIND).

Karma is the guardian, so to say, of the path that leads to universal knowledge and wisdom.  As we live we have noticed we have desires, thoughts and express these if words and acts (and in otherways also).  We have associated with us Monads of lesser experience, and they make up, because of their attraction to us (our Monad is considered to be a ‘Mind-level’ Monad), the “tools” we use in living here  (body, brain, feelings, thoughts, memories, etc…),  .

One may say (but this is not a thoroughly correct expression) that the Monads of lesser experience: constantly come and go in and out of our “bodies.”  (They are then dispersed according to their affinities to other parts of our environment.  But they retain an affinity with us,  and in due course they return, bringing with them the impression that we gave them, for good or ill.)   This is what is referred to as “returning Karma,” and we can see that this is the fairness, justice and merciful aspects of Nature in action.  We get back eventually all we have generated.

Thisis a part of the action of the ASTRAL LIGHT since each Monad has an astral body of it own

I hope this may to some extent answer your query.

Best wishes,

Dallas
