RE: Theos-World Purusha and prakriti

Dear Friend:

Mme. Blavatsky in her small book THE KEY TO THEOSOPHY (and again in the much larger one THE SECRET DOCTRINE) will give you the definitions of PURUSHA (Spirit/Soul) and PRAKRITI (Matter) as the original Theosophical doctrines were presented.  Those definitionsmay be special or general depending on the audience, as in Sanskrit the words (depending on the selected Philosophical School) are also found to very in exact meaning.

Broadly we may say, Theosophically, that PURUSHA is Spirit or THE PERFECTED ALL, and PRAKRITI is the many kinds and sizes of “FORM” with present limits and qualities.

The two are said to be opposed, because SPIRIT (purusha)  is UNIVERSAL, ETERNAL, IMPERSONAL.  Prakriti (MATTER) is said to be limited to shape, form, time, motion.  It constantly changes under the impulse of the constantly moving law of karma,  Hence it has been called Maya or Illusion..

Thuswe have in manifestation out of the ABSOLUTE  (PARAMARTHA) the universe of many countless MONADS  (life-atoms, elementals, etc…) and each such monad is deemed to be eternal, and indestructible.  In terms of intelligence and consciousness, IT continually experiences the limitations of FORMS and is continually under the guidance of the impartial LAW OD KARMA which brings to each one the appropriate sensations of “Good” and “bad.”

The ultimate GOAL of PERFECTION which is said to be the aim of the many incarnations andperegrinations of the MONADS leads at its final end in any one MANVANTARA, to a complete CONSCIOUSNESS of the whole.  This in its turn leads to an appreciation of the Laws of the Universe which are faithful and true, and just and merciful, that directs everything, including it, and all other Monads to this supreme goal of PERFECTION, which is a unity in understanding with every one of its brother monads as well as with the ONE ALL ONE -- this might be called UNIVERSAL SELF-consciousness.

I mention those books, as you are studying THEOSOPHY because they come from the original promulgator of theosophy as the Mahatmas decided it was to be again presented to the world.  Many like Tainini (and myself included, as do all students) have tried to present Theosophy in what they think are “easier terms.”  This is a fallacy, as it is best for each student to go direct to HPB and her writings.  This is why I recommended THE KEY TO THEOSOPHY.  If in addition to the theory of Theosophical doctrines you wish to approach the “Heart Doctrine,” then secure a copy of THE VOICE OF THE SILENCE and use that on a regular daily basis for your concentration and meditation.

The doctrines of Theosophy give the laws, history and progress of the LAWS OF NATURE and of ALL EVOLUTION.  No one escapes that.

The VOICE OF THE SILENCE gives the doctrine of compassion, of justice, fairness and self-sacrifice which underlie that.  All the theory, and the metaphysics of theosophy serve to present to us that supernal basis of BROTHERHOOD which resides in all our hearts, as a universal and common urge, to be of service to others.  Wisdom can never be bought.  But all true students listen to the words offered by many who may claim to be “wise.”:  Such disciples have each within them the same ability (residing as a faculty of PURUSHA/Spirit/Soul) to discern the TRUTH however hidden it may be.

In fact if you go to BLAVATSKY.NET you will find a great spread of what is available.  The idea is to set up your own parameters of study and choose to record and think over the many details and definitions that are given.  Each one chooses their own GURU.  We have H.P.B. and through her, the ever-living Mahatmas, who are also known, in their entire fraternity, as they ever-living human banyan tee of WISDOM.

BEST WISHES

Dallas

Dear Sirs,
I was wondering if any of you could shed some light on the terms,
purusha and prakriti.  I am reading Taimni's Science of Yoga and when I read
these terms I become confused.  I look them up, meditate on them and still
become confused.  I was hoping you might shed some illumination on these
terms.  Also, just from an outsiders point of view, I have the same
experience when I read as Dallas described.  I already have had the
experience and the book verifys where I am or what I am doing and secondly if
I do not understand it I am not "there" yet.
Ananda
