KARMA AND SYMPATHY

Nov 19th 1998

To think that theosophy ever advocated heard hearted indifference
to anyone's suffering is incorrect.

The cardinal object of theosophy is BROTHERHOOD.

If we do not yet look on all others as brother-soul we fail in
the first step in our own advance, regardless of how brilliantly
we may be able to argue ourselves out of the responsibility that
seeing and hearing places us in.

Karma operates uniformly and takes into account the MOTIVE of our
thought, word, and deed. We think those are secret and for most
they are but not for KARMA, which notes them all. We think we
are isolated and forget that the atoms, molecules and cells which
we constantly borrow from Nature around us by various processes
are also intelligent and they becomes the "carriers" of our
KARMA. As we use them, we shape them. We imprint them
magnetically with the electricity of our thoughts and feelings as
ethical impressions. They return to us when the time comes for
the effect of our thought or deed or word is mature. We have not
been trained to think of think of this. But Theosophy offers
this proposition in regard to our being part of a living
Universe.

The VOICE OF THE SILENCE offers as an instance: (p. 14)

"Let thy Soul lend its eat to every cry of pain like as the lotus
bears its heart to drink the morning sun.

Let not the fierce Sun dry one tear of pain before thyself hat
wiped it from the sufferer's eye.

But let each burning human tear drop on thy heart and there
remain; nor ever brush it off until the pain that caused it is
removed."

( VOICE p. 38)

"To perish doomed is he who out of fear of Mara fear of Mara
refrains from helping man, lest he should act for Self...The
selfish devotee lives to no purpose. The man who does not go
through his appointed work in life-has lived in vain."

I hope this is of some help.

Yes. What a brilliant approach. Your explanation solves a lot of
problems
very very easily. When we see a man or woman or a child suffering
and/or
hungry we can easily close our eyes and hearts and take refuge in
the
explanation how their past karma is responsible for their current
problems
or suffering. And by their suffering they would be reducing their
karma and
it is very good for them.

If we are just concerned with theosophy as a living science of
spiritual
evolution, then where does the first object of TS come into the
picture? It
is an interesting question to explore.
