Self-reliance

Visanu Sirichote writes, quoting the Mahatma Letters:
> "Nothing Short of full confidence in us, in our good motives, if
> not in our wisdom, in our foresight, if not omniscience - which
> is not to be found on this earth - can help one to cross over
> from Ones land of dream and fiction to our Truth land, the region
> of stern reality and fact."
The adepts also make contrary statements emphasizing the need for
self-reliance and that people are more or less "on there own" in
their efforts - "self-induced and self-devised efforts" as HPB
says somewhere. I think this quote might be misleading, and that
it concerns mostly direct chelas working under an adept in
Blavatsky's school, and also maybe certain initiations. I don't
think it applies to "lay-chelas" and other aspiring students,
generally speaking. Maybe this would be agreed with.
Buddha reportedly said: "And whosoever, either now or after I am
dead, shall be a lamp unto himself, and a refuge unto himself,
betaking himself to no external refuge, but holding fast to the
truth as his lamp and to the truth as his refuge, looking not to
anyone besides himself as a refuge, even he among my disciples
shall reach the very topmost height. But he must be anxious to
learn." (- Maha-Parinibbana-Sitta)
