Dear Mark:
Thanks for the excellent quote from the Mahaparinirvana Sutta.
As far as I can figure out the only progress we make is
individually, whether one is a 'chela" or not. It seems to me
that the law of Karma would take care of all motives, and we
advance or retreat depending on our choices.
In a lawful Universe that would be strict justice.
