HPB & Musical Sand

by Martin Leiderman

In Isis Vol. 1 p. 605, HPB wrote “ There are many spots in the
world where the strangest phenomena have resulted from what was
later ascertained to be natural physical causes. In Southern
California there are certain places on the sea-shore where the
sand when disturbed produces a loud musical ring. It is known as
the “musical sand . . . "

One day, 10 years ago, I was walking on a beach in Carpenteria, a
town near Ojai, CA when I realized something really strange was
happening under my feet. I was walking on a “musical sand” beach
of HPB, which never happened to me in Venezuela where I walked
probably in about 20 different beaches . . .

In the September 97 issue of the Scientific America to my
surprise I found an article “Booming Sand” subtitled: Though
known for centuries, sound producing sand remains on the nature’s
more puzzling phenomena. The authors after formulating several
theories wrote in their last paragraph:

> But perhaps the greatest attraction of singing sands is that it
> remains an unsolved puzzle.

Hope you found this entertaining. Has anyone experienced that
phenomenon, of walking on a musical sand beach?
