Actually, I think I should've said; so it should be even and especially today, given that schools and universities are, or seem to be, becoming more and more content a/o corporate controled.
The truth is in our day and age, just as in some other/prior times there is a real need for societies a/o institutions that can provide (teach, research, publish, discuss, so on) reliable data, common grounds and alternate informations in the arts and sciences - that as a service holds a two-fold benefit for both the scientist/academic as well as the individual and general public.
