Friends,
Here are some statistical data from Slovenia:
Population by religion in Slovenia, Census 1991 and 2002.
Catholic - 71,6 % - 57,8 %
Protestant - 0,8 % - 0,9 %
Orthodox - 2,4 % - 2,3 %
Islam - 1,5 % - 2,4 %
Believer but belongs to no religion - 0,2 % - 3,5 %
Atheist - 4,4 % - 10,1 %
Did no want to reply - 4,2 % - 15,7 %
Unknown - 14,6 % - 7,1 %
Statistics in Slovenia can be treated as good average of the situation in Europe.
When child is born in Slovenia s/he is usually baptized and in that way becomes a Catholic according to Church. This is the main reason for such high percentage of those who consider themselves Catholics. But there are only about 10 % of these who later attend ceremonies on regular basis.
Citizens' trust in the Institutions according to the regular monthly research of the Public Opinion Research Center - March 2009 (Results do not differ much in last years):
EURO - 56 %
PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC - 56 %
ARMY - 50 %
INFORMATION COMMISIONER - 46 %
ANTICORRUPTION COMMISSION - 41 %
PREMIER - 40 %
OMBUDSMAN - 40 %
EU - 39 %
BANK OF SLOVENIA - 38 %
POLICE - 34 %
MEDIA - 32 %
SUPREME COURT - 30 %
NATO - 30 %
UNIONS - 30 %
GOVERNMENT - 29 %
COURT OF AUDIT - 24 %
PARLIAMENT - 20 %
COURTS - 18 %
CHURCH AND CLERGY - 17 %
Best regards,
Anton

But Frank has a point too: a large proportion of European citizens don't believe in God in the old fashioned sense anymore at all. Many are 'vaguely spiritual', instead of believing Christians. And of the believing Christians, less are identified with a specific Christian tradition.
