The retrograde motion is only an illusion the planets do not move in reverse or backwards in their orbits it is a line of sight appearance composed of orbital distance, motion of the heavens, and the line of sight here on earth. The speed doesn't change, no change of the orbital mechanics occurs retrograde motion never happens, if it did the inertia, kinetic energy and forces of space would tear the planet mercury or any other planet apart into small pieces.
