I don't believe there should be a president - politics and philosophy don't mix.  Theosophy should be a consensus group made up of representatives of all TS outlets.   First agenda point should be whether Leadbeater and his followers are Theosophists or Liberal Catholics.

I've put this to one of my contacts close to the center of TS power.

My opinion is: I agree that the president should be voted for
directly. The general council is not a democratic body (members get on
there in a variety of ways: some more directly democratic than others)
and should be reformed before it's given more executive power.

Generally speaking though: the TS does have to be run, people. And
that does involve a measure of politics. Just like the US has to be
run and that involves making choices and taking responsibility.

But I do think we should be sure that this is a proposal in the formal
sense (as in: the president and council are seriously considering
implementing this) as opposed to a way to start a brainstorm about how
the TS should be organized. Only when it's a serious proposal in the
first sense should we start going activist about this. If it comes to
that though, please involve me in spreading the news and signing the
petition.
