It only confirms my point of view.
Let's imagine similar situation in the West:
Russia in its expansion has taken most of the northern Europe. France 
is still independent, but is under strong influence. Russia owns a 
railroad there with wide strip of land regarded exterritorial. On the 
north coast of France, not far from England, it builds a military 
base... (Nightmare for Europe, isn't it?)
Then England attacks Russian fleet in the harbour of Haague and then 
kicks out from its bases in France.

Can we call it invasion to Russia from the west? I think not.

Substitute China for France and Japan for England and you'll get a 
picture of Russo-Japanese War.
