That was me and I was repeating an old joke that I had with John Algeo about the main job of the President is making sure that the grounds are taken care of.
One of the principal differences, it seems, between the US section and the rest of the world is that we don't see the President as having spiritual authority, but merely as an administrator who gets to give a talk every now and then and hopefully does not embarrass us all in the process. This creates a radically different mindset as to the method of choosing the President with the result being that much of the accepted method is seen as either arcane or downright ludicrous and easily dispensed with. Style is of utmost importance because without it the substance will not get very far with the audience and bookeeping skill is more important than an undefined concept of spiritual development.
In 1978, around Olcott, the election was certainly not about who was the most spiritual, or who was the most qualified, but rather who was the most sane. I've been away from Olcott and the area for some time now so I don't quite know what they are thinking, but we have a political tradition in the US of the "Favorite Son," meaning a local candidate who gets support because he is local and that is certainly driving support for John Algeo in the US section. There has long been a feeling that the Indians have sort of led the society down a rathole and it needs a US president to pull it out again. And Radha has never been very popular. Remember, she was elected because she was viewed as the least crazy, not entirely sane herself, but certainly better than the pitiful loon Rukhmeni who went to her death still believing that she was an Arhat.

My laptop is caput. So cannot say who worte something supporting John A. Message said that John would bring something good for estate of Adyar specially for its buildings. I saw with my own eyes that Radha had transferred resposibility to someone else. This was an official document on the information board at Adyar. They have also now fixed Blavatsky Bungalow. One reason, so I am told, for Radha´s atitude not to hurry fixing buildings so much has been that that goverment of the city has been trying to take the land off the TS. Blavatsky Bungalow maybe got broke beacause Banyan tree was growing too close to the building. Maybe they have that attitude that nature must let be and grow without cutting off any braches as we have had same problem with enviromental activists, but maybe we both have learnt something from the mistake.
