Friends,

The nature of consciousness is indeed an intersting study. One way to 
look at it is to ask if the being is conscious that it is conscious. 
That could be an occult definition of self-consciousness. However, 
the most salient differentiation between humans and animals, wild 
animals and domesticated animals included, is the matter of choice. 
Animals do not choose to disobey the law of their nature. They behave 
according to natural law without question. Human beings, on the other 
hand, have evolved the power to choose whether or not to obey the 
laws of nature. We can look around our world today to see how well 
that works out, at least so far. Maybe we need to emulate the 
behavior of animals a bit more?
