the article I read recently stated this to be true (elephants being self-aware) due to the fact that they can recognize themselves in a mirror, which no other animal can. there is also the fact of the elephant's memory, it can remember a wrong done to it for many years, and the fact that they do bond with other particular elephants (bonding, not mating). they raise each other's young also. interesting.

We can't figure out what consciousness is in humans so how can we understand what consciousness is in other forms.
