Me either, I think it has something to do with pole or starting position!  Sometimes the outsider wins as was the case in our last Melbourne Cup.  It paid 26 for 1!

The other theory which seems me more logical says that from 4th 
subrace of 3rd race comes 4th race, from 5th subrace of 4th race comes 
5th race, etc.
But his views about negroes make sense, as it seems to me.
