Here is some additional interesting observation. While reading the history
of Russian TS, a link to which was posted by Konstantin, I saw the
following. Keep in mind it was in early part of 1900s and Russian Orthodox
Church was very powerful and hence the wording of the objects of TS:
"What is Theosophical Society? Theosophical society forms a nucleus of the
Christian Brotherhood, which studies religious systems, philosophy and
natural sciences, explores the forces of nature hidden in the man, struggles
against the material side of the human being, promotes the principles of the
spirit of truth; develops spiritual powers and establishes the superiority
of spirit over matter. The main principle for the members of Society ? love
your neighbour as yourself".

If the objective is to drum up membership (and donations), then the above
would work in today's USA with a combination of christian right wing and
interest in New Age matters!!!!
