I don't know exactly but this date is generally accepted all over the 
India, and theosophical literature, as far I know, never questioned 
it.
Blavatsky wrote (somewhere in the SD) that exoteric numbers given in 
the Puranas are close to the real esoteric numbers.

If I remember correctly, exact date is 3102 b.c.
She also wrote that the first 5000 year-period of Kali-yuga ends in 
the very end of 19th century what leads us to the same numbers.
Overall duration of kali-yuga, according to the Puranas is 432000 
years.
W.Q. Judge in the "Ocean of theosophy" gives the same numbers and the 
same starting point.
