There have interesting toys throughout history, some of them rather large  
like the temple gadgets invented by Hero of Alexandria, but lacking the  
supporting technology they could never be more than interesting  curiosities.
 
The Romans had a primitive steam engine but could never translate it into  
heavy machinery because they did not have steel mills.
 
Technology does not exist in a vacuum.
