2 Points for Tingley
Here's something Blavatsky wrote about
a "paraclete" possibly being sent or recruited
before 1897 to save the Theosophical Society.
This was in 1886, after her health was ruined
by the Hodgson Report, she resigned as
secretary, and in response to an article
by Hartmann, "A Theosophical Fable," a
fantasy about the TS, ("Harmonical Society")
and its special "instrument" (HPB), in
which he symbolically treats the TS at the
time. Tingley took over the Am. Society
after Judge died in 1896 and was recruited
by Judge. A "paraclete" is someone that
aids, comforts or rescues, and Tingley
would fit that definition well as the best
person to take over Judge's work, et. al,
with her organizational skills, etc. In
commenting on Hartmann's fable, Blavatsky
writes:
"There now remains but one thing
to be done, if the 'Harmonical' Society
would be kept alive.
"Let its President do as the
ex-Corresponding Secretary _has_ done:
depose himself before he is deposed by
others, - and the Society will die a
week later. But let the Society - now
dishonored because there never was real
harmony in it but rather personal and
individual selfishness - unite together
at last and wait patiently and prepare
thro' _active_ work for the advent of
a _Paraclete_ who may yet be drawn to,
and sent to them before the end of the
cycle in (1897)." (BCW, vol. VII, p. 54-B)
Blavatsky said "no new messenger
would be sent before 1975..." but a
"paraclete" isn't the same as a "messenger."
So this is evidence from HPB that someone
like Tingley might be recruited by her
school to help the society out, after
her getting wrecked by the Hodgson Report,
and after her death possibly. Judge
recruited Tingley. Adyarites could apply
this to Besant too. Probably Besant and
Tingly were the most notable potential
"paracletes" HPB was refering to, before
1897 and after Judge's death.
