It appears that Rudy contradicts your beliefs when he wrote on BN-Study

The EGO that gets hurt is the personality, of course, which was created by the lower manas, in touch with KAMA. It is this EGO that reacts to the material world, adulation and criticism. On the other hand, the Individuality, or Higher Ego, the real Man, is not psychologically hurt by any external agent. These two selves do not interact easily. They reside in different planes of existence, so to be able to get in contact with each other, and finally merge, the lower EGO, has to transform itself by changing its vibrations so they are more akin in quality and charater to the vibrations of the Higher EGO. In other words, it is the personality which is supposed to rise to the level of the Higher EGO, since the latter cannot descend to the vibrations of the personality.
