Take a look at what an Indian theosophist writes, referring to Gandhi:

"Gandhiji was very clear that the real meaning of our epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata can be found only when we see them as allegories representing the battle of the good and evil within our own hearts -- each heart represents the Kurushektra, he said."
