Jake,
Thanks for your comments and views. The other Stapledon Books are worth the
read, I don't have all of them either, the Ethics Book he wrote I haven't seen
on a shelve anywhere. I really enjoyed how creative he was in portraying
unknown species and societies and their different conventions. The cohabitation
with another consciousness was very novel perspective wise.
Sorry I am not familiar with David Lindsay or his works. I completely
stopped reading Sci-fi around 1968. I was enjoying works like "Lords of the
Psychon" by Daniel F. Galouye, Bantam 1965. Story of a struggle to prevent
Interdimensional beings from displacing the earth to a distant locality and the
survival necessity of developing mind powers upon matter and telepathic ability
involving all of Plato's Geometric shapes. Back then I liked also the books Roger
Zelazny authored. and several other authors.
Very interesting your observation about using a resource of George
William Russell for Starmaker, you are the first I have received that from. Yes you
are correct that pick me ups are quite often inspiring to authors in their
creative frenzy, lol.
Your question about what Carl meant may not be easy to verify. He did
correctly state that "Bro. W. w. Wescott, M.B., P.M. and P.Z., who is the
Secratary General of the Rosecrucian Society, and Praemonstrator of the Kabbalah to
the hermetic Order of the G.D." (G. R. S. Mead's citation in the preface to The
Theosophical Glossary Preface. January 1892, where he says Wescott works with
the assembly of the Glossary providing articles marked with "www" in it. So
Mead and H.P.B. were directly aware of the G.D.
There is some online mention that there is speculation that H.P.B. was of
the "Society of Eight" who originally formed the prototype of the G.D. along
with Dr. William Wynn Wescott, S. L. MacGregor Mathews, Dr. William Robert
Woodman (died 1891), Frederick Holland and three others. I think Carl was
researching and asking if there was anyone who had letters or other artifacts that
could lend conclusive evidence to his perspective. Carl cited "The EST Book of
Rules" (Point Loma, 1930). " About ES and GD. This is a footnote of G.deP EST
Book of Rules." I don't have that myself so I can't comment. Carl's copy is in
Swedish. Carl also cites as did Carlos "The Esoteric Section and the Golden
Dawn" by R. A. Gilbert (Theosophical History Centre, 1987 ). Carl also cited
Aleister Crowley and his "LXXI" Title Page "LXXI, The Voice of the Silence, The
Two Paths, The Seven Portals by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky 8*=3*, with a
commentary by Frater O.M. 7*=4*." The use of "8*=3*was the G.D. grade number for
"Secret Chief."
It was first published in "The Equinox vol. III no. I " in 1919. It was
republished in "The Equinox vol. IV no. I" (subtitle; "Commentaries on the Holy
Books and Other papers"), printed by Samuel Weiser, 1996. These are all here
Carl's citation not mine and are his personal research. Crowley cited Blavatsky
above. Carl wants to find a letter that was alleged to have been written by
Frau Anna Sprengel the enigmatic personage that he wonders if it was really
H.P.B. Carl's question was and is:
"So are there any proven facts that HPB was a secret Chief of the GD? Does
anyone here know of any? Has any other author then Crowley said that she was?"
That is Carl's context. No, I don't think Carl was BSing. I believe he is
sincere and asks honest questions in looking for additional basis and proof of
his research. I also believe Carl has integrity here.
Madame Blavatsky if I recall correctly somewhere said that animals as
familiars participate in a reciprocation viz the animal lends it's vital energy
and in exchange receives a form of ensoulment. Ella Adelia Fletcher a
Theosophist, wrote a Book on the Breaths. "The Law of Rhythmic Breath subtitled -
Teaching the Generation, Conservation, and Control of Vital Force" 1908. You might
like to find a copy if you already don't have it. Yes, I do agree with
Blavatsky we are in the Ocean of Beauty in the timeless NOW. I have had experiences
consequential to rapport and it can be a significant instruction.
The Russell short story was a nice read thank you. I see your viewpoint
and it may be as you say.
Regards,
John
