Russia probably could play its part even earlier, if the communist
revolution not ruined everything.
Russian Section of TS was founded in 1908 and after 5-7 years became
one of the most active in Europe.
Though it had around 400 regular members, the supporters were counted
probably by thousands. The theosophical influence, especially in arts,
was great. Order of Service also worked actively, especially during
the first world war.
In 1918 Theosopical Society was prohibited.
Later, till 1940's, the section in exile existed, which had a required
number of lodges and members.
Disconnected theosophical groups existed in USSR too but were
suppressed to 1929, when most theosophists were imprisoned.
