Jake / Daniel –

I have been `inspired' by your interchange to review E.S.
Instructions V and particularly the section on `THE HEART' , which
includes the part where HPB quotes KH on `Concentration' .
Certainly HPB's comments prior to this, discussing deep sleep, the
brain, opening the `third eye' are among the most profound and
insightful that I have read anywhere in her writings:

"The Spiritual Consciousness is active during deep sleep, and if
the "dreams" that occur in so-called dreamless sleep could be
impressed by the Heart on the Brain, your Consciousness would no
longer be restricted within the bounds of your personal life. If you
could remember your dreams in deep sleep, you would be able to
remember all your past incarnations. This is the "memory of the
Heart"; and the capacity to impress it on the Brain, so that it
becomes part of its Consciousness, is the "opening of the Third Eye."

[BCW 12, p. 696]

Then in the next paragraph HPB refers to `Purusha in the Heart' and
says:
"The student will now begin to understand why so much stress is laid
on the Heart in connection with meditation…" AFTER laying this
foundation in `occult physiology', HPB then quotes from KH:

"Your best method is to concentrate on the Master as a Living Man
within you. Make His image in your heart, and a focus of
concentration….etc"

>From today's perspective with so much more literature from sacred
traditions available than in HPB's time, it can be more easily
confirmed that this type of `meditation' practice' is found in all
the schools of Vajrayana (Tibetan) Buddhism and various schools of
Sufism, some Christian mystical traditions, as well as other
esoteric traditions. It can easily be found in Tibetan histories
that all the Panchen and Dalai Lamas as well as Tsong Khapa
practiced and taught a type of `Guru yoga' similar in essentials to
the practice that HPB describes in this Instruction #5. This is also
true in Sufism as in the famous relationship between the great
Perisan poet Rumi and his eccentric Teacher Shams of Tabriz. (Rumi
devotes volumes on this student//Teacher relationship in the
mystical Persian poetic manner, after Shams disappears forever in a
blaze of light during an attempted assassination attempt.) She also
gives an outline of the connection between the eyes, optic nerve,
heart and pineal gland also found in Dzogchen `Great Perfection'
oral instructions.

HPB then continues over the next pages to detail more clearly
encapsulated information on `occult physiology' with correspondences
between the principles, physical organs and interactions between
them. Some very unusual and challenging statements are what HPB has
to say about the Mayavi Rupa. She states that "the guiding
intelligence that informs it [the Mayavi rupa] comes from the Heart,
the essence of Manas entering it." After a paragraph that could in
itself generate weeks of thought, study and discussion, she ends
with a real challenge to the student (p. 707 BCW 12):

"As said, the projection of the Linga-Sarira should NOT be attempted
but the student SHOULD seek to exercise the power of Kriyasakti in
the CONSCIOUS projection of the Mayavi-Rupa." (caps added)
