The first step on the path of Discipleship is to fully understand and integrate the personality. Once the personality is seen as fleeting, changeable, inconsistent, and its thoughts, emotions and actions are seen as reactive, can it be absorbed into higher mind, transmuting those energies from the astral to the buddhic plane, that is, passion to compassion, ambition to aspiration, intellect to wisdom, etc.
Until this recognition occurs we are still in Plato's cave.
