THE PURPOSE OF HISTORY

Jun 29, 2006 11:58 AM

Dear Friends,

What's the purpose of having a clear historical view of the theosophical movement?

No isolated events or personalities, but contexts in evolution -- historical processes.

The real purpose of knowing the past is to better understand the present and then identify the seeds of future which we should plant and take care of.

What can we do to go beyong pure gossips about isolated facts (most of them personalistic who-said-whats )? First of all, we must have a sincere commitment to its present and to its future.

>From our honest view of past events in their context, what line of constructive and creative action can we infer, in order to guide our actions both individually and collectively? That is: what practical lessons wqe take from our view of the past?

This should be a question in the agenda of our historical debates.

What is, or what could be, our historical project in this first and second quarters 21st century?

Hopefully, the study of the past can help liberate us from at least some of the past mistakes. When looking at the victories and defeats of the past, we should see the practical lessons in them.

Everyone makes mistakes all the time, and many do learn from them!

(We should also remember that we can best know trees by their fruits.)

Best regards, Carlos Cardoso Aveline
