Daimons - in their lower aspect
A symbol of the desires which coalesce with thought and contain energies directed to the external world. Also the appetites, passions and illusions of the lower nature.
Daimons - in their higher aspect.
A symbol of the Higher Self, or of the Individuality in the causal body.
"Archedamus thinks that the voice which influenced Socrates was...the influence of a superior intelligence and of a Diviner soul, OPERATING UPON THE SOUL OF SOCRATES, whose calm and holy temper fitted him "to hear this spiritual speech, which, though filling all the air around, is only heard by those whose souls are freed from passion and its perturbing influence." Plutarch, On the Daemon of Socrates.
"Did Socrates therefore call his own nature, which was very critical and productive, God? Just as Menander says 'our mind is God.' And Heraclitus, 'a man's character is his daemon" Plutarch. Qu Platon.1.2.p.999
As metaphor
The "daemon" is the Higher Self or Individuality, in relation to the Personality (Socrates) which was approaching perfection and gradually accomplishing its salvation. The 'taking poison' is a symbol of the final quietus given to the lower nature, after which the consciousness rises to the higher state.
How much proof do you need Carlos?

Dear Dallas,
Please do read Plato.
Then you will see Socrates deserved to be Plato's master.
You saying Socrates did not purify his lower self seems to be a strong indication that you are not familiar with Plato's Dialogues.
Socrates had frequent samadhis. And such a clarity as his can't come, as you well know, in the absence of purity in the lower self.
Please do also some reading of Xenophon -- not a Platonist -- and Xenophon's independent testimony of Socrates's great wisdom will duly impress you.
In the average, HPB's and Masters' quotations/references on Socrates confirm that impression, as anyone can see by looking at them.
Best regards, Carlos.
