Soloviof wanted to be accepted as a disciple. 

Being rejected, he turned against HPB and showed his inner substance.

The same thing seems happened with Pythagoras, in ancient Greece. When he refused as a disciple an important political leader, persecution was unleashed against Krotona's community. 

With the SPR fake report, Soloviof saw a golden opportunity to slander HPB and took advantage of the new winds.  

A financial support from the Vatican may have strenghtened Soloviof's  "convictions", as in the well-documented case of the Coulombs.  

Soloviofs later publicists seem to work as volunteers for his "cause".  

Michael Gomes do not support Soloviof or the Coulombs as a historical source, as Leslie Price also does not do, as long as I know.   Leslie Price and Walter Carrithers, very unlike Caldwell, defended H.P.B.  So does Gomes, in the case of the Coulombs and in others instances. 

Caldwell and Algeo, not historians,  are the lonely smart guys, somewhat supported by P. Johnson and Katinka Hesselink.   

The advantage Caldwell and Johnson obviously have  in being compared to Algeo is that they both admit they are NOT theosophists, while Algeo is the international vice-president of the TS Adyar.
