H.P. BLAVATSKY ON MARS AND MERCURY.

Dear Friends,

Mr. Pedro Oliveira quotes HPB’s “Secret Doctrine”.
The quotation was correctly copied by him. [See p. 707, volume II, Boris de Zirkoff’s edition, and at the same page and volume in The Theosophy Co.’s edition.]

In the paragraph quoted, H.P.B. says absolutely NOTHING that can suggest that the fancies written by C. W. Leadbeater about Mars and Mercury are correct. Just the opposite.

After stating that other planets may have other forms of life which will be VERY DIFFERENT from those on our own planet, H.P.B. writes in the paragraph:

“ (...) and it seems perfectly useless to go into detailed questions of the physiology, etc., etc., of these hypothetical inhabitants, since after all the reader can arrive only at an imaginary extension of his familiar surroundings.”

That’s precisely what Mr. Leadbeater did. In his writings about Mars and Mercury, he produced a detailed, mayavic, imaginary extension or mental projection of his own familiar surroundings.

But this is not all.

The Martian & Mercurian fancies did not start with Mr. Leadbeater, and HPB clearly states that they are false in the very “Secret Doctrine”. She writes:

“When the present work was commenced, the writer, feeling sure that the speculation about Mars and Mercury was a mistake, applied to the Teachers by letter for explanation and an authoritative version. Both came in due time, and verbatim extracts from these are now given. ‘It is quite correct that Mars is in a state of obscuration at present, and Mercury just beginning to get out of it’ (...).” [Volume I, p. 165, of the Boris de Zirkoff edition, same page and volume, “The Theosophy Co.’s edition.]

Had C.W.L. read “The Secret Doctrine” and other writings by H.P.B. with due attention, he would not have lost time visiting Mars and Mercury so often.

But then he would also have avoided talking too much to the “Lord Christ”.

After all, H.P.B. clearly wrote that there will be no outer and physical Messiah coming any time soon
[ “Collected Writings”, TPH, vol. VIII, p. 172-173 ].

That did NOT keep C.W.L. from announcing to the World that Christ was coming back through Krishnamurti and his Liberal Catholic Church.

O o o O o o O o o O o o O o o O o o O

Peace to all beings, Carlos Cardoso Aveline.

No, you haven't lost it. My reply to you is included below. You are
welcome to ignore my answers. Just don't expect me to answer the
same question again and again.

CWL was not the main founder of the LCC. It was James Ingall
Wedgwood, who was consecrated on 13th February 1916. CWL was
consecrated on 22nd July 1916. They are generally regarded as
the 'founding bishops', but the main founder was Wedgwood.

Editorial matters should be referred to editors. I was never an
editor of TPH. Did you raise the editorial issues you are now
raising when you worked in the editorial section of TPH Adyar back
in early 1994?

I see that you have chosen to ignore the quote from "The Secret
Doctrine" on life on other planets, also included below . You are,
naturally, entitled to do so.
