Well, yes and no. As a student of theosophy it is not necessary to be vegetarian. As one learns and grows from studying the ancient wisdom, it becomes a moral question, that is the sanctity of all life. The study of theosophy is the study of history, alchemy, astronomy, religion, the universe, etc and the relationship of us as the microcosm and that of the macrocosm. After awhile, we learn much about ourselves as spiritual pilgrims. How we think, how we feel, how we act in the world. Without judgement or condemnation of self or others. This is no easy feat, once we understand how we think we can then change our thinking and our desires from the personal (egoic) to the impersonal (beyond ego). It was put to me over 20 years ago, to be silent while the storm rages around you.
As May West said, fasten your seat belt because it is going to be a rocky ride!

ps Do not hold back on the questions as it is the only way to get the answers. I personally enjoy Isis Unveiled, but you may find if you have a TS bookstore that the book you need will virtually jump off the shelf for you.
