Dweller on the Threshold.

A literary invention of the English mystic and novelist Sir Bulwer-Lytton found in his romance Zanoni. The term has obtained wide currency and usage in theosophical circles. In occultims the word "Dweller" or some exactly equivalent phrase or expression, has been known and used during long past ages. It refers to several things, but more particularly has an application to what H.P.Blavatsky calls "certain maleficent astral Doubles of defunct persons." This is exact. But there is another meaning of this phrase still more mystical and still more difficult to explain which refers to the imbodies karmic consequences or results of the man's past, haunting the thresholds which the INITIANT or INITIATE must pass before he can advance or progress into a higher degree of initiation.

These dwellers, in the significance of the word just last referred to are, as it were, the imbodied quasi-human astral haunting parts of the constitution thrown off in past incarnations by the man who now has to face them and overcome them - very real and living beings, parts of the "new" man's haunting past. The initiant must face these old "selves" of himself and conquer - or fail, which failure may mean either insanity or death. They are verily ghoosts of the dead men that the present man formerly was, now arising to dog his footsteps, and hence are very truly called the kama rupas of the man's past incarnations arising out of the records in the astral light left there by the "old" man of the "new man who now is." In man, two major energies are anchored, The Presence -- the evolutionary
represented by the Angel of the Presence the other The Dweller on the
Threshold.

The final phase of the conflict is fought out between the two, and the will
of the spiritual man is brought into substance. Man is thus the battle
field of the Solar* and Lunar Angels.(Cass: within his nature) Man has the power to give victory to one side or another by lending either side the use of his mind.

Cass: *The Solar Angel is a metaphor for the Christ consciousness within man.

The Soul (The Triad of Atma, Buddhi, Manas) and the Personality (The physical vehicle), are brought face to face. Cass:

The Angel of the Presence distributing Solar Fire and holding focused
electric fire and the Dweller on the Threshold expressing and utilising
"fire by friction" know each other with intimate occult knowledge. The
rupture between the Sun and the Moon occurs. The chains of Karma are
broken, man is liberated.

evolving pari passu with it on a Higher Plane. They will eventually meet

The constitution of the sun, just like that of a man, is built of monads, of atom-souls, which are pilgrims on the pathways of the spaces of Space, each one at its heart a god. Consequently, when our sun in distant cosmic times shall have become something still more wondrous, the atom-souls and monads which make up its vehicles now - and which form in part even the physical splendor that we see - will have become suns. Our present sun by then will be the divine essence infilling a galactic universe; and its atom-souls, and the younger gods and spiritual beings now belonging to and surrounding it, will be scattered through that universe as stars and suns, nebulae and planets.

The sun is immaterial in its higher parts. This does not mean that there is no matter there, for the sun is surrounded with veils of ethereal matter which produce our sunlight. What we see is the physical expression or reflection of a cosmic god - literally. (Cass: I intuited right on this one)

"The real substance of the concealed (Sun) is a nucleus of MOTHER SUBSTANCE. It is the heart and the matrix of all the living and existing Forces in our solar universe. The heart of the sun is a dhyani-buddha. P294 Fountain Source of Occultism.

This particle of mother-substance (otherwise, spirit matter, pradhana or mulaprakriti) is the substantial although spiritual focus in and through which the dhyani-buddha of the sun lives and expresses its powers. P294 Ibid

The awakening of will is then for us the perfect form of angelic
co-operation, the knowledge of the oneness of all things. As we learn to
discriminate between the self and the not self we learn to awaken the Will
until equilibrium is attained. The contact with angels will become more and
more real to us until we experience fully conscious communion. This
communication is not by language or symbols, it is by reminiscence, a
recovery of that which had been obscured or hidden, the light of the
Dhyani's pierces a veil and illumines the mind and an understanding follows
of that which has always been known but forgotten. A sudden realisation
that he is more than merely human man.

These Dhyani Chohans/Manasadevas are what produce self consciousness in man
and are the energy and substance of the cosmic Heavenly man. 

The left and right hand path has its origins in the special condition in the
astral body of our Planetary Logos, and with his history, as it lies hidden
in the astral light. Not yet is his work completed and deva substance in
its various living orders is not yet brought fully under his control.

The "Dweller" seems to be an "elementary" created by each one in and for his
own Lower Self (Kamas-manas). [ Technically it is a cluster of elemental
forces and "monads of lesser experience," impressed with disruptive,
law-resisting, personal-independence tendencies. We have created it. Its
abode is on the Astral Plane. And occasionally, by sensitive persons, it
can be seen.]

It is a part of our own Lower Self inasmuch as it is composed of those
"life-atoms" which, in the past, we have distorted by our own free-choice of
evil and selfish thought, feelings and actions. [For a list of the Monads at

And these impressions, having aggregated, now project a fearsome appearance
to the "sight" of some, who, becoming clairvoyant in a lower section of the
Astral Light, perceive it -- and clothing it with their imagination -- have
given it a "form" in their memory.

Cass: Yes, and it is interesting that it takes the form of a metaphor isnt it?


Look on the positive side: some think they have met or seen a "Master." 

On what bass is such a vision possible? 

It is either real as an "outer" friend and guide -- an Elder Brother -- if
we DESERVE such a service to us, or, it is the way in which we visualize,
using our own Lower brain-mind (Kama-Manas) how our own HIGHER SELF ought to
appear (if it could) to us objectively. 

Cass: If you are suggesting that the Higher Self's morality is in question, wouldn't the vision be appropriated by the principle of Buddhi-Manas and not the principle of Manas in the Higher Self? This would give us a glimpse of what will happen if the Higher Self continues on its same path?



The "Dweller," or an idea of it, can frighten some into deeper study of
their own lower-nature (kama-manas) and then they may adopt for themselves
a regime of self-reform (morally) if they take the hint. [Did Dr, Jekyll
take the hint when he saw the magic portrait of Mr. Hyde ? ] 

I believe this is more in thinking of evil, selfish, men who are commencing to, or have, cut off all links with the higher emotions and mind, and not your average daily run of the mill man, who may at his stage of evolution, put his needs before others. We also have an opportunity to do this in the after death states when we resolve to return to do things better next time. Is your sentence, "a regime of self-reform (morally) if they take the hint," general or specific?



We need to get our terms right if we are to know which each one of us is talking about.
